- Change your locks, e-mail address and phone number and avoid contact with your ex-partner.
- If you are able to, have an alarm system installed or speak with a security company about assessing and upgrading the security of your home.
- Speak to the RCMP about getting a restraining order, peace bond or no contact order. Shelter outreach and counseling staff can help you in this process if needed.

- Make sure your ex-partner cannot find you on social networking sites (Facebook, My Space, Twitter etc) by changing your privacy settings.
- Change your work hours and route taken to work or school, and have someone escort you to your car or bus stop if you feel unsafe.
- Keep a copy of any protective orders with you at all times.
- Tell your friends, family, neighbors and employers that you do not feel safe and ask them to watch out for you and your children.
- Make sure that your children and their teachers/activity leaders know who is allowed to pick them up from school and activities and not to go with anyone else. Shelter staff can support you with talking to your children about safety and what has happened in the family.
- Ask people in your life not to share information about you or your children with anyone.
- Give copies of any protective orders to employers, neighbors and schools along with a picture of your ex-partner.
- Have someone check in on you (by phone or in person) regularly to ensure that you are safe.
